      About vbs

      VBS: Where It All Began

Growing up Methodist, Vacation Bible School wasn’t just a summer tradition—it was the highlight of the year. When my family moved to Christ Church United Methodist, I was beyond excited for my first VBS there. I marched right up to Mrs. Amy, the children’s director, full of confidence and energy, and said, “Get ready to get Luchaked.”

That year, something special happened. My dad and I—me just a 10-year-old kid with big ideas and even bigger enthusiasm—built our very first VBS set together: SonSurf Beach Bash. It wasn’t just about crafts or decorations; it was about transforming a space into a whole new world. From that moment on, it became our tradition. Every summer, my dad and I would spend hours outside, sawing, painting, hammering, and laughing as we brought each new VBS theme to life.

At the time, I thought I was just helping out at church and having fun with my dad. I didn’t realize that those long days in the sun, building backdrops and telling stories through scenery, were laying the foundation for something much bigger. Looking back now, it’s clear—those early summers were the beginning of my love for storytelling, design, and the magic of theatre.
