Working on this show under Hank Schwemmer, the Lead Fabricator at Texas Performing Arts Fabrication Studios, was a defining moment in my journey as a theatre technician. It was my very first build in the shop—and to be completely honest, it pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible.
I came in confident, carrying years of hands-on experience passed down from my father in our garage. He taught me the basics of carpentry, and for a long time, I leaned heavily on those early lessons. But in the fabrication studios, I quickly realized that there’s a whole world of technique, discipline, and precision that I had yet to discover.
At first, I struggled. I was stubborn, stuck in my old ways, unsure of how to adjust to this new environment. But Hank was patient. He challenged me, guided me, and helped me break down what I thought I knew—so I could rebuild it into something stronger. He didn’t just teach me how to use new tools or how to problem-solve in a high-level shop—he taught me how to be a better craftsman.
What started as a humbling experience became a turning point. I walked away from that build with new skills, a deeper respect for the craft, and a fresh perspective on what it means to grow in this field. It was a privilege to learn under Hank’s leadership, and it’s an experience I’ll carry with me into every project from here on out.
