The H-E-B Delivery Race: A Gameday Project
Thanks to Texas Performing Arts and a partnership with H-E-B, seven students at The University of Texas at Austin—including me—were asked to create an interactive attraction for the H-E-B Gameday Tent on Bevo Boulevard. On home game days, UT Athletics shuts down the roads around the stadium and turns the area into a giant, free carnival. Our job? Make something fun and eye-catching for people ages 18 to 35.
After a lot of brainstorming, we came up with the idea for Wooden Arcade Park, a throwback-style arcade with a modern twist that ties into sports. We split into three teams to build different games: Texas Roots Labyrinth, All the Ways to Save Pinball, and my project—The H-E-B Delivery Race.
We spent two months working on the design and story behind each game. My team built several cardboard prototypes of the Delivery Race, experimenting with different layouts. At one point, we even tried a foot drop at the starting line before settling on a smoother, more accessible design with a fast-paced track.
By gameday, everything was finally ready—and it was seriously the coolest project I’ve ever worked on. I’m super grateful to J.E. Johnson for bringing me onto the team.
